Forty Six & 2 is a song by the American progressive metal band Tool. It was released as the fourth single from their second major record release Ænima in 1996 and received radio airplay. A popular belief is that the song title refers to an idea first conceived by Carl Jung and later expounded upon by Drunvalo Melchizedek concerning the possibility of reaching a state of evolution at which the body would have two more than the normal 46 total chromosomes and leave a currently disharmonious state. Forty Six & 2 is the fifth track on Ænima. Forty Six & 2 was one of the singles chosen for Ænima. My shadow'sshedding skin andI've been pickingScabs again. I'm downDigging throughMy old musclesLooking for a clue. I've been crawling on my bellyClearing out what could've been. I've been wallowing in my own confusedAnd insecure delusionsFor a piece to cross me overOr a word to guide me in. I wanna feel the changes coming down. I wanna know what I've been hiding in. The Forty-six and Two drum solo is even more rare. Usually Innagadavida, Frankenstein the rest of the band stops. I also find it interesting that the title of the song if Forty Six & 2, not 48. From a literary stand point, I think the & is significant, and is a metaphor for evolution the process of changebecoming better suited to fit your enviroment. The whole album has the same message from start to finish if you listenthink about it. Aenema is one album, that if you listen to the whole album you really feel the message. I believe the song is about discovering yourself, getting your full potential, growing and changing, perhaps using a metaphor of evolving and chromosone changes. Review by Conor Fynes PROG REVIEWER. Forty Six & 2' - Tool Single. Here is another one of the tracks from Tool's second album 'Aenema' that really meshed well with me. Despite coming off of an album that left me feeling lukewarm, 'Forty Six & 2' manages to take the sludgy anger that defined the album but channel it into a very careful build up and sense of composition. This track is built around an ex. Forty Six & 2 digs a bit deep into human consciousness and human nature, exploring some of the ideas developed by psychoanalyst Carl Jung which were later touched upon by mystic Drunvalo Melchizedek born as Bernard Perona. Throughout the song, we hear Maynard singing about the shadow. So what's this all about
