Kick starting the new year, Cinematics latest release comes from label debutant Reggie Dokes in the form of Child of The Sun EP. An inspired artist hailing from Detroit, Reggie spoils us with three funk fuelled cuts via the motor city An inspired artist through his association with Derrick May and Transmat, Reggie is one of the unsung heroes from Detroit whos sole purpose has always been to concentrate on the music. His Psychotasia record label has been an outlet for releasing his signature sound of soul inspired deep house and techno that has gained him plaudits all over Europe. Child of the Sun is a poprock album by Mayte Garcia, released in 1995 in Europe, and the United Kingdom. It was not formally released in the United States. It was produced by Prince when they were married, and released by NPG Records. The album was not very critically or commercially successful. The album has a similar style to Prince's albums of the same period. The cover theme was If I Love U 2 Nite. Some songs on the album include: House of Brick, a version of Brick House by the Commodores. Reggie Dokes' previous recordOnce Again, on Royal Oakmay have been fairly straightforward. But with Child of the Sun, his first this year, the house lover shows a reluctance to be pinned down. The eponymous track is about as erratic as they come, throwing bright slivers of melody headlong into the mix and scattering them the second they arrive. Hang on long enough, however, and the pieces start to assemble themselves into more coherent loops. It's like watching a window smashing in reverse. Reggie Dokes' previous record―Once Again, on Royal Oak―may have been fairly straightforward.

"Funk Below" sounds like last year's "Haiti"―from the aforementioned Once Again―only all juiced up on opiates. It employs a similar piano loop, but this time the keys drift along in a contented narcotic daze, rather than bounding forward. Dainty pads float alongside in a similar fug, adding to the spaced-out mood. The real curveball, however, is "Make Believe." It's a meaty techno stomper; the kind of thing Marcellus Pittman or Omar-S might put together. And it marches, quite literally. The mass of jackbooted, goosestepping soldiers it evokes sound like they're at the window. Onto this indefatigable foundation, there's really only one serious addition: a gyrating, buzzy synth which spreads the focus around somewhat. As a result, what could have been a repetitive, tedious cut is instead hypnotic and almost infinitely replayable.

With so many 'wishy washy' tracks tagged as Deep House and the overuse of dry loops, Reggie restores the balance by laying foundations and working from the bottom up. The title track 'Child of The Sun', with its minimal approach, springs to life with a deep, acid bassline that drives the track forward until the enlisted piano drapes over the groove in ways reminiscent of the classic early Techno coming out of Detroit. This is no real surprise considering that Reggie's early musical works have often been associated with Transmat and Derrick May. Following on 'Funk Below' floats much in the same vein: equally as soulful but more organic with the use of percussion and dreamy pads. The standout track is surprisingly the 3rd track 'Make Believe'. Even though a more downtempo tune, it builds powerfully - creating tension until the main lead arpeggiates over the warm kicks. Score!
