Mastodon - Leviathan review: An unbelievably great album that betrays very few signs of the band's relative newcomer status in the field of prog sludge Southern metal, if such a field exists. Review Summary: An unbelievably great album that betrays very few signs of the band's relative newcomer status in the field of prog sludge Southern metal, if such a field exists. Where to begin Mastodon have shattered expectations for 21st century metal and emerged as one of the premier bands in the genre. With the exception of System of a Down, Opeth and Tool, almost no other band has offered such a unique take on the art and emerged with both critical and commercial success. Mastodon find their niche as a thinking man's metal band. Blending Voivod's neuro-thrash, Therion's majestic gloom, Morbid Angel's spirit of restless and morphing liquid black melody, and EyeHateGod's Southern rock gone awry, Leviathan is nothing short of supernatural. Joseph Merrick With an ageless magnificence and rich musical imagination, Mastodon unleash Leviathan, an unabated testimonial to the band's earthshaking ability to rock. rorro23 It is raw and keeps the rhythm during the whole disc, it is powerful and direct. A combo in the face to the senses. Apart from that the art of the cover is well worked and in great detail, like the album. Quite addictive Favorite track: Blood and Thunder. Wolfman This is truly one of the greats of sludge metal. Released August 31, 2004. Leviathan Tracklist. Blood & Thunder Ft. About Leviathan. Mastodons second and final album for Relapse Records and its first concept album. This LP is inspired by Herman Melvilles American classic Moby Dick. The album was voted Album of the Year in 2004 by Kerrang, Revolver and Terrorizer magazines. Leviathan Q&A. How did the band come up with the idea to do an album about Moby Dick Drummer Brann Dailor told Chronicles of Chaos in 2004, Last summer when we did the headlining shows of the UK, I was in the middle of reading Moby Dick. Album 2004 10 Songs. As it turns out, Ahab's single-minded fixation with killing the white whale is perfect fodder for the band's relentless sonic barrage. Guttural vocal growls and shape-shifting drums provide the backbone for slabs of grinding fret calisthenics Blood and Thunder, sludgy metal Iron Tusk, and lilting prog Seabeast

All the covers of the different press of the disc are identical ??? Is there any way to differentiate them ?? Thanks!!!!
I have to echo others as to the quality of the vinyl pressing. I was floored by a friend's vinyl (orange swirl vinyl, so I believe that makes it a 5th pressing), and it was actually the impetus for me to start collecting vinyl. This is without a doubt my favorite metal album, so when I heard the quality differences on vinyl, I rushed out to start collecting. This was my first purchase on Discogs, and I tracked down a 1st pressing 180g black. When I got it, I was just... disappointed. It feels choked and narrow, especially when the record gets busy or loud. It really feels like it's coming through like... a broken amp, or something. Cleaning my record DID improve the sound quality, and I imagine if I put it into a vinyl vacuum, it might get even better. Maybe there's a lot of mold release gunk or something on these records? I know that there's a great pressing to be found here, because I've heard it, and it's far and away more developed and rich than the CD version. But my copy, even with the 180g first pressing, is just... problematic. I'm hoping I can improve it. Buyer beware. If at all possible, listen to this on a trusted system before you spend money.
Yeah. I've got the first pressing and it sounds like brickwalled mastering. If there are better versions out there with a different mastering, why aren't they labeled as remastered? Very weird.
Best West
I have no idea why lames praise this album, it's packed with a bunch of basic, cliche, boring, metal riffs that have been done by 100,000 other metal bands. The "Moby Dick" concept doesn't help either, I give it a 1.5 rating since I've heard worse albums. 1.5/5
Leviathan is without doubt Mastodon's pinnacle. Sludgey/Prog Metal that will crush your skull. The vocals can be a bit annoying at times but overall a very good album. 70/100
