It was released through the band's own FSA Records label in November 1993, and by VHF Records in the United States in 1994. Band member David Pearce described the style of Flying Saucer Attack as rural psychedelia, which was also an alternate title for the album. Kieron Tyler of The Arts Desk found that the album exemplified the more diffuse direction that shoegazing music had taken by 1993, after the genre's. Submit review. Want to see. Super Reviewer. Drenched in greaser culture and sporting a rousing rockabilly soundtrack, Flying Saucer Rock N Roll offers a unique twist on the standard alien invasion flick. Rating: NR. A really great and unfortunately really rare private press (this Neptune label is definitely not the soul label it is connected to here). I bought the copy that can be found in the sales history here (I am really glad I did) and it obviously did not turn up another time (the one currently for sale here is really ridiculous pricewise; I think the price I paid here reflects the status of this record). I owned a copy before that I bought on ebay which had bad water damage on the cover but was signed by Rhoten with a dedication to a girl. It is not easy to categorize; the review in the Acid Archives is pretty good. It's not really a loner folk album although there are some acoustic songs (especially All Night Long is really good); maybe the term 'loner rock' fits better. Someone used this to describe the great 'False Ego' LP by Eddie Callahan and I think Ken Rhoten has many similarities to Callahan. It is also very well produced for a private press, also has a full band setting with some eerie synth playing and really good songwriting (unfortunately, both have one annoying good timey track on them, while all other songs are great). But while the overall mood of False Ego is really dreamy, Flying Saucer Man has a slightly disturbed and dark aura. As said in the Archives, this guy thinks he does not belong here. The whole thing feels quite strange in spite of the great songs, in fact, it has a bit of an early 70s Bowie alien vibe; it is definitely informed by the punk and wave movement and this comes off, as sometimes with these later songwriter obscurities, as a clear advantage.
This is indeed an album that music lovers with different tastes could enjoy and it would definitely be worthwile to do a reissue of it.
