This is the 2nd pressing with the 1st take of the piece.
By accident Bob Thiele put out the wrong take. After he went through the initial press run, he switched the masters to the other take and inscribed edition II on the inside of the runout circle. So there are really two versions of ascension.

Album

Ascension is a jazz album by John Coltrane recorded in 1965 and released in 1966. It is often considered a watershed in Coltrane's work, with the albums recorded before it being more conventional in structure and the albums recorded after it being looser, free jazz inspired works. In addition, it signaled Coltrane's interest in moving away from the quartet format. Coltrane described Ascension in a radio interview as a big band thing, although it resembles no big band recording made before it. John Coltrane. Each take alternates ensemble sections with solos accompanied by a rhythm section featuring pianist McCoy Tyner and drummer Elvin Jones, both of whom are pretty much impossibly good the two bassists strike me as just excellent
