Roots and Branches is the sixth album by bluegrass group The Dillards, and their only for the Los Angeles based company Anthem Records. This company is not related to the later Canadian company of the same name. 1970 found The Dillards parting ways with Elektra Records once again after two critically, although not commercially, successful albums that found them exploring a style that would come to be known as country-rock. They were quickly signed by White Whale Records, with whom they would cut two. Known by most people as the Darling Family from the hills on The Andy Griffith Show, the Dillards were much more than that. Combining and Branches was the Dillards' first release after a gap of a couple of years following their groundbreaking country-rock-bluegrass albums for Elektra, Wheatstraw Suite and Copperfields. It was also by far their most successful, and their only LP to reach the album charts, where it peaked at Number 79. It wasn't nearly as musically satisfying as their late-60searly-70s Elektra work, however, in part because Herb Pedersen had been replaced by Billy Ray Latham, but more because they edged toward a far more mainstream rock sound. Roots and Branches is the sixth album by bluegrass group The Dillards , and their only for Anthem Records. The Dillards are an American bluegrass band from Salem, Missouri, - popularly known for their appearance as The Darlings on The Andy Griffith Show. In late 1970, The Dillards began work on what would become the Roots and Branches album. Although not much information is available about the sessions, it is known according to a press release issued with promo copies of the album that the recording process lasted nearly 18 months, with the album going to market in May 1972. Roots and Branches takes a backseat to the Dillards three years spent on the Griffith Show and their classic Elektra tenure, albums which have never gone out of print since Elektra is owned by the Warner Music Group conglomerate. Roots and Branches has only been reissued once by the United Kingdom-based Beat Goes On Records on a two-fer combining the underrated 1973 follow-up Tribute to the American Duck. A 1996 CD reissue autographed by Rodney Dillard featuring the Dillards 1972 album Roots and Branches paired with its 1973 follow-up, Tribute to the American Duck.
